Message from the Director

Happy New Year! With the new year comes new hopes and opportunities. I know we are all anxiously awaiting a world with reduced COVID-19 pressure on our day to day life, and 4-H work. Yet, with uncontrolled spread of the virus and vaccine roll out just starting, Arizona Cooperative Extension continues to follow COVID-19 mitigation phases. You can check your counties phase here (https://t.e2ma.net/click/snsgvc/s3cj3mp/c3hmjj).

I, along with our county-based 4-H professionals and UArizona Cooperative Extension (UACE) administration, are monitoring the situation and assessing our recommendations for 4-H state events and participation at county fair. With an eye towards helping get our program back to doing (while taking the responsibility to keep youth, volunteers, and our communit safe), we have set dates for all of our regularly expected events.  We will determine the COVID-19 mitigation requirements a month ahead of the event. Keep track on our Arizona 4-H webpage and on Zingbooks. Also, all livestock weigh ins will continue this spring with COVID-19 mitigation requirements in place, ask your county-based 4-H professional about specifics.

In the meantime, I want to thank you for continuing to create opportunities that help youth thrive (https://t.e2ma.net/click/snsgvc/s3cj3mp/svimjj). I am proud of the array of virtual offerings from our 4-H professionals. This month alone there are several opportunites in Agriculture, Civic Engagement, Healthy Living, and STEM.  Also, our Volunteer resources (https://t.e2ma.net/click/snsgvc/s3cj3mp/8njmjj) page is being updated, check out the progress.

Stay safe and healthy,

Jeremy Elliott-Engel

Make The Best Better

Deadline for completion: January 31

4-H project work is conducted in a cycle. We ask youth to complete a project, and then reflect on their successes and challenges, and then apply those lessons to their project work the next year. We can reduce this into a common saying: Do. Reflect. Apply. This same process is important for all improvement processes. To ensure Arizona 4-H is going through this same process, we have established an annual 4-H program evaluation for 4-H youth members and caring adults.

We are asking each Arizona 4-H volunteer and youth to complete a survey. Each survey will take 10-15 minutes. To say thank you for providing your feedback, we are going to draw names for $20 gift cards to Shop4-H.org or Amazon for caring adults and 4-H members respectively. To learn more about the drawings go here (https://t.e2ma.net/click/snsgvc/s3cj3mp/ogkmjj). Survey’s can be found at:

Arizona 4-H Ag

at Home

Have you checked out the many resources to support your livestock project work - when you can't gather or you want to get more content in before you meet in person?  Topics are wide-ranging and there are both activities you can lead in your project meetig and virtual seminars to attend.

Check out Arizona 4-H Ag(riculture) at Home (https://t.e2ma.net/click/snsgvc/s3cj3mp/gmnmjj). If you have questions contact Arizona 4-H Ag at Home (mailto:betsygreene at arizona.edu?subject=Arizona%204-H%20Ag%20at%20Home), Equine Specialist.

Curbing Our Carbon Appetite Challenge

We are excited to announce that AZ 4-H has been selected as one of seven states to implement the 2021 4-H Ag Innovators Experience (AIE). Do you have youth interested in learning about the importance of a healthy sustainable food supply to feed a growing world? And are those youth ready to share what they have learned with other youth as a leader through community service and civic engagement effort? Then this project is right for them! Go to the 4-H Ag Innovators Experience 2021 (https://t.e2ma.net/click/snsgvc/s3cj3mp/weomjj) event page to register and for more information. Contact Dr. Ag Innovators Experience (mailto:lopezg3 at email.arizona.edu?subject=Ag%20Innovators%20Experience), 4-H STEM Specialist with questions.

Take Aim on Arizona 4-H College Scholarships

In December, we shared the Arizona 4-H Youth Foundation Scholarship Application would be available through ZingBooks on January 4, 2021. Unfortunately, the programmers are still working but they will be open soon. The deadline remains April 1, 2021.

All college aged 4-H youth and recent alumni are eligible for Arizona 4-H Youth Foundation scholarships. Perennial youth miss out on scholarships because they do not apply, please encourage the youth in your club that are college age or recently aged out to apply.  Please check with your local Extension Office for any deadlines specific to your county. For questions, please contact the AZ 4-H Foundation Scholarship Chair, AZ4-HYF Scholarship Applications (mailto:norquest at email.arizona.edu?subject=AZ4-HYF%20Scholarship%20Applications).

A Civic Engagement Experience for Teens
We are looking forward to hosting the Engaged Citizens Event on January 27th, 2021. This event is crucial in helping to educate youth about civic education while simultaneously making invaluable impressions on Arizona legislators. The Engaged Citizens Event is hosted and sponsored by the Arizona 4-H Youth Foundation (https://t.e2ma.net/click/snsgvc/s3cj3mp/c7omjj) with key educational components taught by area experts and professionals. We welcome two youth delegates (between the ages 14-18) from each county and tribal 4-H program. You will find more information about the content of the event here (https://t.e2ma.net/click/snsgvc/s3cj3mp/szpmjj). Registration closes on January 20th at 7:00 PM MST. For questions contact Schuyler Germann (mailto:sgermann at arizona.edu?subject=Engaged%20Citizens%20Event), Extension Assistant, State Teen Leadership.

We have farm tours, baby chicks hatching, and an interactive portion where your students can ask a farmer questions about the program!

If you're a teacher looking ways to change up your class's usual routine, TVF has you covered! Sign up now for six 60-minute virtual fields trips that include pre- and post- materials for each of the field trips's lessons.
