Dear Directors,
Below is an email from VP Burgess. I trust that you all have everything well in hand at your county offices, but if you would like to talk, just drop me a line. We will certainly discuss this tomorrow at the CED meeting.
Take Care,
Ed

Subject: URGENT AND IMPORTANT ALVSCE POLICY INFORMATION
Everyone, please see the important email from Provost Folks below.
My focus is first and foremost on the welfare or every employee and student at the UA—it was before the pandemic, is today, and will continue to be so. It must be clear to everyone on this email by now that it is in everyone’s best interests en-masse that our single biggest priority must be keeping our educational delivery in-person. Arguably, some may see this a “least-worst” scenario; but regardless there is no scientific argument that the fewer people on campus in our buildings at any given time, mean an increased probability of lower virus-loads in our population and so lower risk of person to person infection.
Effective immediately all supervisors must use their acumen to manage employee work location to achieve the strategic intent articulated by the provost, not only on Tucson main campus, but in all ALVSCE facilities, so that in-person teaching, and our laboratory-based research programs, have the best chance of continuing without disruption.
The practices required will be different for every ALVSCE supervisor. But these should not be a challenge for any addresses of this email. However, supervisors who report to you may not be at the leadership skill level to be able to make their decisions without your input—please be available to them.
I know that some people will argue that we are already in a very low risk situation of so-called “vaccine breakthrough” sars cov2 infections in vaccinated people, and that these people are at an even much lower risk of COVID-19 disease, and that any gain will be incremental. I agree, the gains are incremental (as they are real). However, the negative effects of in-person class teaching moving on-line are so large, and the “costs” of keeping our environment as low in virus challenge as we can are so low, that doing all we can practicably do to keep our education in-person is worth it.
Regards
Shane

Subject: Note regarding on campus activity
Dear deans,
Following up on our conversation on Friday;
The spread of the coronavirus delta variant in our community will continue to create challenges for us in the coming months. Our institutional priorities are to sustain our in-person student learning experiences to the greatest extent possible and ensure continued strong research productivity / creative activity.
For other activities, I ask that you work with your unit’s leaders / supervisors to manage the presence of employees on campus in ways that reduce the risks of spreading COVID-19, actively reducing the number of personnel in your workspaces at any given time, where it makes operational sense. Being flexible and creative in managing your teams’ on-campus activities can serve to increase employee satisfaction, reduce unease, and also help our community to stay safe.
As a reminder, please always allow employees time to adjust to new protocols / work expectations, in case they may need to make changes to care-giver schedules or other plans in response.
With thanks,
Liesl
