Dear Faculty,

Since 2019, several committees have engaged in a shared governance process to organize and implement better practices for supporting the careers of the career-track faculty at the University of Arizona. These processes identified the proliferation of career-track titles (with more than 235 in current use) as contributing to ambiguity around roles and responsibilities, creating confusion about promotion opportunities, and limiting our ability to assess and promote equity across the institution.

In response to the recommendations from these committees, we are working to harmonize career-track faculty titles across all units to facilitate appropriate recognition of the contributions of career-track faculty, and to improve our institutional supports for this significant group of employees. Please visit our website<https://facultyaffairs.arizona.edu/career-track-faculty-resources> for background on the shared governance process, reports, FAQs, and guidelines developed for the harmonization process.

A limited set of titles has been proposed, vetted and recommended by career-track faculty committee members for future use, as currently defined in UHAP<https://policy.arizona.edu/uhap-definitions>.  These are;

  *   Instructor
  * Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Principal Lecturer
  * Assistant, Associate, and Full Clinical Professor
  * Assistant, Associate, and Full Research Professor
  * Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor of Practice

Going forward, all CT faculty will have one of these limited set of 13 titles, just as the tenure-track faculty have only a limited set of available titles. The use of non-standard working titles will also be discontinued to ensure we communicate with clarity over roles and responsibilities to all of our internal and external constituents.

We recognize that for some career-track faculty this change will be disruptive, since many have “bespoke” titles that precisely describe their very specific duties. We sincerely hope that the benefits of creating institution-wide clarity and improved career-pathways and supports will offset the short-term disruption of changing titles.
Heads/Chairs/Directors are asked to initiate discussion as soon as possible with their faculty who do not currently hold one of the current career-track titles. Heads/Chairs/Directors may also consider a move to a career-track title for some adjunct faculty who are likely be appointed for more than one year and / or who are employed full-time. There is no need to change or review titles for faculty who already have a title from among the 13 listed above. However, this process may also be used to change titles of career-track faculty whose responsibilities appear misaligned with their titles. The timeline for this work is relatively tight, since we aim to have all changes entered into the business system in time for new contracts to be issued for FY or AY 21-22, as appropriate. Once this is achieved, we will initiate the long-awaited pay-equity review for career track faculty, starting in Fall 2021.

For any additional questions please contact Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs Andrea Romero at romeroa at arizona.edu<mailto:romeroa at arizona.edu> or Associate Vice President for Finance and Administration Marilyn Taylor at taylorm at arizona.edu<mailto:taylorm at arizona.edu>.

With thanks,
