Subject: Arizona 4-H programming and COVID-19 (All 4-H Staff & CEDs)
To All Arizona 4-H Youth Development Professionals and Supervisors:
There has been much warranted attention to the COVID-19 situation. To help provide guidance to you and our volunteers about programming a statement (included below) has been embedded on the Arizona 4-H COVID-19 Response website<https://extension.arizona.edu/az-4-h-covid-19-response>. Currently the state 4-H office (including James 4-H Camp) are not planning on canceling events. Further mitigation efforts or event decisions may be forthcoming as the situation evolves.
The leadership of the Arizona 4-H program is monitoring the Coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) situation. Decisions regarding COVID-19 with implications for Extension operations will be made at the county level. For further updated information please refer to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website. Arizona Cooperative Extension and Arizona 4-H will follow all programmatic decisions put forth by University of Arizona Provost, Liesl Folks.
With all situations pertaining to health individuals need to weigh all of their own personal risk factors and make an informed decision about participation. We will communicate decisions about Arizona 4-H state programs on this page. Arizona 4-H state leadership team is monitoring the health and safety implications of events planned for Spring and Summer 2020. Currently, all events sponsored at the state-level will still be held.
Please check back regularly as this is a developing situation and in the coming days, weeks, and months we will know more about the local implications of COVID-19.
Programming decisions at the county-level will be determined in coordination with your County Extension Director, per guidance from Dr. Silvertooth.
We are coming into Spring County Fair season. My recommendation to you is to follow your local County Fair Board and County Health Department recommendations about participation in the County Fair, while encouraging and supporting effective mitigation efforts (e.g. handwashing stations, encouragement of sick individuals to quarantine, etc.). Messaging about 4-H at the County Fair currently will be a county-based decision and will be communicated locally. I am happy to provide support and guidance through this decision as you desire.
May we pledge our hands to better service and our health for better living (also wash your hands).
Jeremy
