CEDs,
We are all receiving an abundance of information regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) from many sources. This note from Banner Health provided me a reminder on the basic situation at present, the recommendations for prevention, and my need to communicate a general direction for the Cooperative Extension System.
It is hard to say where this COVID-19 will go in the weeks ahead but in the process I trust all of you to be thinking ahead on contingency plans for your unit.
I have confidence in your abilities working in your positions to take the correct actions wrt covid-19, as with everything else in your complex jobs. You can best decide the logistics and actions most appropriate for your unit. This will most likely also involve the county administrations you are each working with. As you know, I have no interest in micromanaging this or anything else. Accordingly, I trust that you don’t need to be told about every step needed and you all can navigate the proper path with your unit.
You can all read the guidelines and rules that are coming out, you all have access to the same information I have, many of you are life scientists, and we all make professional risk assessments on a regular basis.
We understand the importance and the fact that we are accountable for how we manage this event, like all others. I trust you in all of your decisions to be making an effort to do the right thing for the case in hand and with the resources you have.
If I can be of any assistance to you in the process, please let me know. I am glad to work with you and help us all deal with this in the best manner possible.
Best wishes and stay healthy!
Best regards,
Jeff

As we learn more about coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), it is important to follow the guidelines laid out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). What we know now is that COVID-19 is transmitted through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Getting sick from these droplets requires a close proximity to an infected person, or touching a surface that might have a droplet, then touching your mouth, nose and possibly eyes. Because of this, surfaces and objects are the major way that the virus is spread, and so the main means of prevention should be handwashing, avoiding touching your face and avoiding close contact with people who are sick. Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched objects and surfaces is also suggested. As of now, masks are not recommended for protection against COVID-19. Masks should only be worn by some health care professionals and patients being screened and receiving care for COVID-19, to protect other patients and health care workers.
Banner Health has developed a process to safely screen patients for COVID-19 in our primary care clinics. In order to be screened in one of these clinics, patients would need to meet CDC criteria for testing. This can be determined through a phone conversation with one of our team members. If you or a loved one has concerning symptoms, please call your primary care doctor’s office to discuss your symptoms and determine if in-person evaluation or testing is necessary. If you do not have a primary care doctor and would like to establish care with Banner, visit our Find a Doctor tool on BannerHealth.com <https://click.enewsletter-target.bannerhealth.com/?qs=4ebb72de675a0b8325cd489611a3335dee0597063b800ea70efe3cb5f246ca1789e8826c31d437ce3f0dd2727e0cd22244cde411b913fbab> . Patients that meet criteria for further in-person evaluation or testing will be scheduled for an appointment to be seen at one of our clinics and provided with instructions for how to safely enter the building in cooperation with the on-site medical team.
Thank you for being the most important part of what we do.
