Subject: [provostoffice-all-faculty] Updated US visa rules require some in-person learning for international students
Dear concerned colleagues,
We have learned this week that the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued new guidance<https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/sevp-modifies-temporary-exemptions-nonimmigrant-students-taking-online-courses-during> for the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), under which our international students obtain their visas to study in the US. Specifically, for the Fall 2020 semester, F-1 and M-1 students may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States.
Please know that we have a team working swiftly to ensure that we will have at least some in-person options available for all undergraduate and graduate international students in the US on the affected visas that will comply with SEVP requirements, so that they may remain in country to complete their academic plans.
ISS will host multiple question and answer sessions on the topic on Wednesday, July 15th. Registration will be available on the ISS Programs and Events page<https://global.arizona.edu/international-students/programs-events> shortly. As always, International Student Services staff is available for advising via email<https://global.arizona.edu/international-students/contact-iss> and Zoom<https://global.arizona.edu/iss/advising>.
More information will follow as soon as we have developed an updated plan to support these students. In the meantime, I appreciate your help in supporting our international students through this new challenge.
With thanks,
Liesl
