From Brian’s FB post this evening
It is with the heaviest of hearts that today we say goodbye to Terry Mikel, a wonderful father, granddad, son, brother, teacher and “plant weenie” (his words). The world has lost a gentle and caring soul but we are all fortunate to have lived, loved and laughed with him.
In our opinion, with this on top of everything else...2020 can Eat a Datura Discolor and rot in the bowels of history!
However, we know he would not want anyone to be in pain over his passing. So please smile and whistle some beethoven while tending your garden, say a prayer of gratitude before nibbling on some weeds or just cuddle up with a warm blanket and watch My Blue Heavan or any of the Die Hard movies….and we will continue to feel his spirit within us and around us.
It’s hard to find words right now... so we’ll borrow some from the wisest and most generous man we know. In May 1999, Terry Mikel wrote in the Arizona Republic:
“This memorial day weekend is a particularly fitting time to plant a wonderful desert tree. Besides the fortuitous timing, what better way to honor a fallen veteran than a tree in his or her memory.”
Is there a better way to honor Terry Mikel? Personally devoid of the greenthumb and expertise of my father, I’ll lean on this community of brilliant “plant weenies” who read this to kindly suggest (as Dad would have) which native tree/species and when to plant it.
His grateful and loved children: Lindsey, Kevin & Brian
P.S. Please help us by spreading the word to friends/colleagues who may not be on facebook. Due to Covid-19, we will plan for memorial services in 2021. Cards or sympathy notes can be sent to: Mikel Family, PO Box 35642, Tucson, AZ 85740-5642. Gifts or flowers are unnecessary at this time but we will later share information about donations that can honor his life. For any additional information or questions, please email terrymikel2020 at gmail.com or send a private message.
