Provost’s Council
2020.08.19
Web Access for Students
· Pre-meeting conversation re: efforts to provide online access for all local students
o Limit need for students to sit in front of campus buildings for access.
o Campus has personal wifi hotspots students can borrow. City of Tucson expanding wifi signal this fall.
o CARES Act money available for students via UArizona application process – can be used to pay for internet service at home.
Student Enrollment, Fall 2020
· Enrollment by continuing UArizona students seems not too far off previous years, but students taking fewer credits on average.
· New-student enrollment is down 5-6% which is better than the expected 10% dip.
· This is a key week, prior to classes beginning Monday 24 August.
COVID-19
· Provost Folks reported UArizona conducted 4264 tests and returned 9 positive results.
o Trying to have testing available for all who want/need one. Would like to have saliva test that is easy, reliable, fast; Yale with promising example.
· Critical to success and keeping pandemic at bay is cooperation by students and staff on and off campus.
o Wear a mask and stay away from others.
o Residence Halls and Student Union part of wastewater testing protocol to look for illness.
· Working on getting online dashboard up and live on UArizona Covid page so everyone can follow the data and patterns.
· Campus testing mandatory if moving into dorm, otherwise have random research program and ability to respond to all UArizona community test requests.
o New students/families go to McKale, get test with >1hr turnaround time. Families pleased and giving supportive feedback. (rapid antigen test)
o Set aside one dorm on campus with >600 available beds for positive tester isolation. One student already in and out following quarantine. Another student in now. Lots of capacity available.
· UArizona expecting upticks, including ready for up to 300 cases before drastic re-think of approach.
o Learning from open-then-closed examples at Notre Dame and UNC. UNC may have been hampered by budget cutting that limited resources for test, trace, treat etc.
o Berkeley and Washington examples suggest uptick in cases detectable within a couple of days and then bring under control and back down within 2 weeks.
COVID WATCH ARIZONA
· Download and use the app! Available now.
o Anonymous tracing opportunities if many on campus enable app and Bluetooth.
o App remembers (through anonymous digital filter) what cell phones you came close to and when.
Ashford and more…updates and conversation threads
· JAAC - Joint Academic Advisory Council proposed for curriculum oversight/differentiation and as problem-solver for issues among new online unit, Arizona Online, and UArizona traditional.
· Confusion about how Ashford becomes part of UArizona but separate.
o Name of new entity that was Ashford needs to be different from Arizona Online and what was UA Global.
o Considering ‘Open Campus’ or’ Open University’, among others. ‘Global Campus’ too confusing.
· Discussion re: how these units coexist and serve more students, including the many post-traditional students and the more traditional young students looking for a top-ranked program in topic area xxxx.
o Coordinated marketing and messaging efforts emphasized. But, geographic differentiation among markets and messages.
o Multiprong approach articulated by Craig Wilson: program, market, geography, coordination.
o Brent White: Hoping to release language of agreement publicly soon, but still with legal now.
· To be continued…How to have these multiple entities, serve more students, realize opportunities, lift all boats, and reduce confusion among students, faculty, and staff.
