Extension Administration Team and Unit Heads,
Based on a recent discussion with a colleague regarding nominations for Extension awards, I believe it is important to offer some clarification.
I do not believe it is best for the Extension Director to be initiating the nominations for Extension awards. If the Director came into the practice of making nominations that would be taking place about three steps beyond the level of action for programs on the ground driven by faculty and staff. That would demonstrate a level of hubris that I do not want to enter into.
The Director should be able to endorse and support the best nominations. The nominations should come from within the ranks at the program or unit level preferably.
We have a lot of good people and programs in the CES that I would very much like to recognize. This recognition needs to come from within the organization and the value is best demonstrated by someone stepping up and taking the initiative to start a nomination of a worthy colleague.
I encourage you all to take this initiative and move good nominations forward as you see appropriate.
Best regards,
Jeff
