You all need to understand that we clearly see the need for the work on our Ag Centers and for Extension personnel to be engaged with producers of commercial hemp.
It is not our lack of understanding the need but rather the lengthy and rather laborious legal and bureaucratic procedures required to get this cleared sufficiently.
That is essential and we simply have to work through it.
You are cleared to work on your Extension responsibilities in relation to commercial hemp production. We will notify you when we have clearance for conducting research on the Ag Centers.
Best regards,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
I second Randy regarding receiving requests to conduct applied research on Hemp in AG Centers. I am glad there’re steps to enable UA Cooperative Extension to conduct such needed research soon to provide our clientele with UA science-based information about this promising crop.

Randy,
I fully understand and agree.
However, there are legal interpretations to work through and then I believe we will need separate licenses from the Arizona Department of Agriculture for each of our experiment station sites to be able to legally plant and test commercial hemp. We are trying to clarify and determine us at this time.
We are pursuing the appropriate steps necessary for planting on our AES sites and will let you know as soon as that is cleared.
In the meantime, we have taken one large step by securing the capacity for Extension personnel to respond to growers who are involved in commercial hemp production.
Regards,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
I am glad to have this update. We have had several requests to plant some hemp at the Ag Center. We have about 120 acres of commercial hemp being planted this week about 1 mile east of us on VIP farms. Please let me know when it is cleared for planting on the Ag Centers. There is a lot of interest and we have very few answers.
THanks,
Randy

Subject: Commercial Hemp Production
Bindu,
We now have clearance for Arizona Cooperative Extension to respond to requests from growers to deal with issues associated with commercial hemp production.
Please proceed as you requested earlier this week, we are clear and good to go in terms of Extension responding to requests from commercial growers.
We do NOT have clearance for planting of commercial hemp on any of our Ag Centers at this time. We are working on that next.
If you have any questions feel free to let me know.
Best regards,
Jeff
