Directors and CEDs,

Below is a summary of our recent CALS Faculty Council meeting. One topic I would like input on is whether we should continue hosting Town Hall Meetings? The last meeting was not well attended, and the council is wondering if we should continue these meetings or not? Please let me know your preference.

Thanks,

Ed Martin

The CALS Faculty Council met this past Wednesday and here is a review of the business we discussed plus some additional info:

We are evaluating whether to continue hosting the Town Hall meetings with CALS Executive Council due to poor attendance. What do you think?

There is now interest to revisit the top 10 problems facing CALS (from the original list compiled in 2012, https://cals.arizona.edu/sites/cals.arizona.edu/files/documents/recommendations.pdf)

>From the CALS Budget retreat, here is the list of top topics of interest :

1. 260k investment set aside to increase POP salaries to make them competitive with POPs elsewhere.

2. The Dean said that they wanted to look at salary compression (stuck with an old low startup) and University said that they could not look at it.

3. Salaries at UA are below the national average compared to comparable departments.

a. The Dean said that data is forthcoming that will show that we are not below the national average.

4. RCM and funding based on Student credit hours. CALS and Engineering are the only colleges that have had positive funding from RCM every year.

a. Because of decreases in enrollment, budgets are going to get tighter in the future.

b. Also, it is not clear how the new University administration might change RCM.

5. Priorities: TA support 2019, merit raises, RA funding, POP salary, faculty AAU parity. And everything was funded except faculty AAU parity.

6. New President: No one knows how RCM might change under President Robbins. Possibly move to activity-based budgeting: more centralized budget compared to RCM,

7. The new UA strategic plan is that there should be an increase in the health sciences.

8. There is also a plan to change how Gen Ed classes are done and having focused areas of Gen Ed, which may change a lot of RCM

The FC met with Heather Roberts-Wrenn and Dominic Rodriguez regarding the CALS Survey, and we had a productive discussion that centered on:

1. Taking a break from Surveys - Survey fatigue

2. Involve faculty and do this separately for Faculty and Staff (maybe alternate)

3. Results/action oriented survey vs. generic survey

4. The Plan is to have each unit develop an action plan to address identified issues
