Everyone, I want to reiterate that I don’t buy into “Given the constraints we face with raising faculty salaries” as a given. I think it should be a priority that this isn’t the case.
Regards
Shane

Subject: Upcoming opportunities to recognize your outstanding researchers, teachers, and citizens
Dear Academic Deans,
Given the constraints we face with raising faculty salaries, we obviously need to cease every opportunity to recognize high performers if we want to retain them. Some of the awards discussed below include faculty salary increases and individual awards of up to $10K. Please encourage your heads to be proactive in nominating their high achievers. Such recognition in and of itself can have a positive impact.

Dear Heads and Directors,
One of the most effective ways to support and retain your top performers is to give them the recognition they have earned. In the exit surveys we conduct each year, more faculty cite a lack of recognition for their area of research as a major reason for leaving than any other concern (including salary). Our findings are consistent with broader research on why faculty leave<https://www.aamc.org/download/164750/data/bachrach_retain_or_replace.pdf> their institutions. The COACHE survey items on respect and appreciation <http://uair.arizona.edu/sites/default/files/uafiles/appreciation_and_recognition.pdf> found that women and under-represented-minority faculty were less likely to feel that their contributions were being recognized.
You have several upcoming opportunities to recognize your top contributors in substantive ways. Please consider nominating your colleagues for Distinguished Professor and Distinguished Outreach Professor awards, the Koffler Prize for Service and Outreach, and the university’s top teaching awards. The Distinguished Scholar award was specifically created to help you recognize and retain your recently promoted rising stars at midcareer (when they are likely to be recruited by other institutions). Several of these awards include a $10K prize, and the Distinguished Professor and Distinguished Outreach Professor awards include a $5K salary increase. We do not receive as many nominations as you might think, in part because departments have a hard planning ahead to orchestrate the nominations. Please do that for those who do so much for you and your students. Just being nominated will show your colleagues that you appreciate their efforts and recognize their achievements.
Details on these awards are available on line<https://facultyaffairs.arizona.edu/content/about-honors-awards>. Nominations for these awards are due by November 30 at 4:00 to Asya Roberts. The only exceptions to that deadline are the nominations for Provost Awards for Innovations in Teaching<https://facultyaffairs.arizona.edu/content/provost-awards-innovations-teaching>, which you and your department’s promotion review committee should be making as part of your assessments of candidates’ teaching. If you line up nominators for these awards now, you will not have to scramble later in the semester when you will be even busier:
* Distinguished Professor awards (generally two or three) are given to outstanding teachers who devote at least half of their teaching to undergraduates.
* Distinguished Outreach Professor awards (generally two or three) are given to faculty for outstanding scholarship-based outreach.
* Distinguished Scholar awards are given to three mid-career researchers with strong teaching and service contributions, generally associate professors who have been promoted in the last six years.
* The Henry and Phyllis Koffler Prize will be given this year for outstanding achievements in public service and outreach. The Koffler Prize shifts annually to recognize teaching, research, and service. This year the award focuses on service.
* Leicester and Kathryn Sherrill Creative Teaching Award<https://provost.arizona.edu/content/university-arizona-foundation-leicester-and-kathryn-sherrill-creative-teaching-award> is one of the University’s top undergraduate teaching awards.
* Provost Awards for Innovations in Teaching<https://facultyaffairs.arizona.edu/content/provost-awards-innovations-teaching> are given on the basis of nominations from departments<https://facultyaffairs.arizona.edu/sites/default/files/18-19_07-Evaluation%20of%20Teaching.pdf> to faculty whose promotion dossiers document exemplary innovations in teaching.
