Good morning -
I sat in on this 30-minute webinar this morning which was mostly an advertisement for how to access this report (URL below) on key demographic trends in southern AZ’s towns and cities. They also showed us how to get to the reports with more detail than is offered in this report (they are linked in its first paragraph):
https://mapazdashboard.arizona.edu/article/key-trends-southern-arizona-communities
There are a number of interactive charts with data to the local level that may be particularly useful in telling Cooperative Extension’s impact story. I’d imagine it would also be useful to our Extension faculty themselves (in southern AZ) when designing their programming and reporting on impact.
Key trends that were mentioned during the webinar:
· Explosive population growth in Maricopa, AZ due to its proximity to Phx metro and Chandler and to the incredible rise there in affordable housing. Maricopa also has the highest rate of growth in household income between 2000-2016, a rapid increase in the numbers of people with bachelor’s degrees, and the steepest decline in its poverty rate.
· AZ’s rate for percentage of adult population with bachelor’s degrees continues to be lower than the US rate.
The report looks at the rate of households receiving SNAP benefits, broken down by community in southern AZ. Also, the percentage of people getting SS/retirement income and the percentage of people getting SSDI benefits. You can also compare the income distribution in these communities compared to the AZ average and the US average. The MAP Dashboard provides access to an archive of some 60 reports or feature articles like this one, so there may be resources relevant to areas outside southern AZ. I haven’t reviewed the trends report myself yet, but it looks like there is a lot here and that this dashboard could be a quite helpful source for statistics when talking about CE programming in southern AZ.
