Job Title: Assistant/Associate Agent, ANR/Urban Horticulture (Phoenix, AZ)

Job Description:

The purpose of is continuing-eligible Horticulture Extension Assistant/Associate Agent position is to conduct applied research, deliver educational opportunities, and provide technical support to the consumer and commercial horticulture sectors, as well as urban agriculture and food systems in Maricopa County. The agent collaborates with retail and wholesale nursery industry leaders to identify research and education needs to benefit the industry and promote environmentally responsible practices in the desert southwest. Research and program outcomes are presented at conferences and state, regional, and national meetings of professional organizations. The agent communicates with clientele and peers through a variety of means, including print publications, peer reviewed journal articles, email listservs, and social media. Educational opportunities are offered through formal and non-formal classes, clinics, and workshops in plant biology, pest management, soil science, water, and other relevant topics, as needed for entities such as Master Gardeners, professional landscapers, and urban food producers. On-site support is provided through visits to identify problems and offer practical solutions. Oversight and guidance is provided to school and community garden programs, the Maricopa County Master Gardener Program (a nationwide volunteer program that trains individuals who advise and educate the public on gardening and horticulture) and SmartScape (a training program for landscape professionals). The agent works with diverse clientele as well as other University of Arizona agents, specialists, researchers, programmatic staff, volunteers, and governmental agencies and non-governmental organization representatives.

Maricopa County, Arizona, is the fourth largest county (2010 census) in the U.S. with a population of almost 4.3 million, the most populous in the state, and nation's highest annual population growth in the U.S. Additionally, Maricopa County is also one of the largest counties in the U.S. by area having a land area of 9,224.27 square miles, greater than that of seven states. The county has a diverse population and a dynamic economic base with many high-tech firms and a vibrant state-of-the-art agricultural economy. The state capital (Phoenix) is located within the county as are numerous county governmental offices. The University of Arizona, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) - Cooperative Extension works in cooperation to support county Extension offices and develop programs that serve the communities of Arizona. The office employs approximately 80 people through various funding streams including five faculty serving diverse stakeholders throughout the county.
