Subject: Your business partners
Everyone,
You've heard me say many times that you should be "joined at the hip" with your business offers.
We need to be able to expect of our business professionals that they are more than transactional "dollars and cents" people. Their professional body, the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), does of them.
Your business officer's professional development means that they must be able to understand your vision and the strategies you have to implement it. They should help you by being professional assets for both your thinking and implementation. They should be able to speak about your units three missions in "why, what, how, who" terms.
When they come to you and talk about their professional development, and when you go to them about this same thing, please discuss how they can be included so that they can hear and understand about curriculum development, models and budgets for new degree programs will work, faculty, recruitment and marketing, research meetings. They certainly should be in your unit meetings. They should be listening to the conversations that will support their growth. Please encourage them to ask you questions and proactively let them in to what is going on.
And also, for your own professional development. I encourage you to attend a National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) annual meeting. Quite an eye opener, very educational and they always have great speakers.
Regards
Shane
