Subject: Re: APR characters
Good morning,
Thanks for including me in the discussion.
A few thoughts regarding the position descriptions that serve as the reference point for the peer review process and need to be part of the APR. I believe many many may need updating.
I suggest that the PDs be directed to describing core duties. Too many PDs contain unnecessary and extraneous details such as committee assignments and specific professional interests.
PDs should focus on core professional responsibilities and areas of assignment.
All PDs should contain the open and clear acknowledgment of responsibilities for professionalism, collegiality, and good citizenship.
Thanks, Jeff Silvertooth

Dan - I agree with Susan and went through some of my emails from this time last year about this issue and it was suggested that we set the maximum to approximately 30,000 characters to account for the extra verbiage in our position descriptions, grants, etc. - things we don't have a lot of control over. I'm comfortable with setting it to 30,000. Mark

Subject: APR characters
Mark and Dan,
I am wondering if something needs to be stated about what is counted for the 26,000 without spaces characters. The way it was previously when those were set it was characters from Grants and Contracts down to just before the position description. When I do mine that way it is 26,202 characters, but when I include the whole document I have 30,706 characters. Some of the concern is that if we do include the position description into the character count everyone is going to make those really skimpy. And the character count was never intended to include degrees and workload. My part above grants is 1545 characters and my position description is 2854. So there are ltos of characters in those sections that I don't think should be counted or at least they had not in the past. Is it possible for the APR committee to make some kind of determination (clarification) on what all sections are to be included in the character count?
Thanks,
Susan
