Team,

Some preliminary data on the issue of page loading times from the meeting this morning. Solutions are being investigated and more information will be shared once it's available.

Hi Dominic,

This is a trade-off we needed to attempt a few weeks ago. We were seeing load times that were unacceptable (sometimes 20+ seconds) for every page on the site. Once we adjusted the cache to clear itself every 24 hours instead of every hour, the site now consistently loads in about a tenth of one second.

When we made this change, we alerted Robert and Kelly about the possible impacts. We then showed Kelly how she could manually clear the cache if anyone requested that their changes be visible immediately. However, since you are being bombarded by complaints, I don't think it's fair for us to expect Kelly to manage the cache by herself.

Robert has been researching a compromise that may work out best for everyone, where when a piece of content is updated, the cache is updated in a smart way that doesn't affect load times for other pages. I will speak with him today to see if this is something we can test first, or if it's something we just need to try on the live site and its cache.

I also suggested to Kelly that if she starts getting too many requests, and if she thinks it's a good idea, we can distribute the ability to clear the cache to all of the CEDs (and other content producers). We'll look into this solution further if Robert's attempts don't work out, since I assume it will affect load time significantly.

Thanks,

Toby
