A big thank you!!
Last week Governor Ducey signed a $9.6 billion budget plan which included a one-time appropriation of $8 million for the Marley Veterinary Medical Program.
We would like to thank each of you who helped play a truly vital role in convincing our legislators to support our new Veterinary Program.  This would simply not have happened without your support.

We have now raised $18 million (over 70%) of our fundraising goal to renovate buildings and buy the medical teaching equipment needed to launch the program. We ask for your support over the next few months to help make this needed program a reality.

Our final step will be to receive our letter of reasonable assurance from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), hopefully in the next 4-5 weeks.

Thanks again for making a real difference for Arizona students and agri-businesses in Arizona!  (see more below)

Last Saturday, at approximately 5:45 AM, the Arizona Legislature adjourned the 2016 session sine die. It has been a whirlwind spring, but thanks to your efforts, we can say that after years of cuts to higher education, the FY17 budget represents a turning point for our universities.

What's Included
The FY17 budget includes $32 million in new funding and $200 million in rollover repayments. Under this budget, the UA receives $91.2 million (39%) of the total higher education appropriation.

  *   $8.2M in ongoing funding: distributed under the new resident-based funding model, the UA receives $2.3M.
  *   $19M in one-time funding: the UA receives $8M (this will be used for capital improvements to the UA's new Veterinary Medicine program)
  *   Elimination of Tuition Remittance: Ends the process in which the universities were required to remit a portion of their tuition revenue to the state Treasurer's office, which were returned in monthly installments. Ensures tuition dollars remain at the local level and helps universities better control costs.
  *   Commercial Paper: Allows the Board of Regents to issue financing to the universities to meet short-term capital liabilities. This allows the universities to operate more independent of the state.
What the AdvoCats Accomplished
It has been our goal to expand the UA grassroots advocacy effort. The 2016 legislative session demonstrated a dramatic surge in the AdvoCats program.

  *   Over 400 new AdvoCats recruited and mobilized
  *   More than 100 AdvoCats present at the Capitol
  *   Nearly 500 advocacy volunteer hours completed at the legislature
  *   48 legislators and staff engaged in-person
  *   Approximately 1,100 e-mails sent to 87/90 lawmakers

What's Next
UA Advocacy will now be giving its attention to the upcoming November elections. With more than two dozen seats in the legislature set to change hands, it will be imperative that we focus our efforts on engaging candidates to help educate them on the need for state investment in the UA. Stay tuned as we roll out our strategy!
