Subject: CALS 2025 Research Growth Goal

HODs,

As you know, the University has reduced  its research growth goal from the original Never Settle goal of doubling research expenditures by 2023, to a 25% increase by 2025. This tracks the anticipated increase in the number of UA students over the next ten years.  While doubling research expenditures was likely unrealistic, I am disappointed that the new target merely reflects the anticipated rate of inflation.

We can do much better than that. Taking into consideration the anticipated number of new hires over the next few years, the increased productivity of our younger faculty, and gradually increasing overall productivity, I am setting a new CALS research growth goal of 50% by 2025.  I have already discussed this new target with some of you, and will continue the conversations during the remaining annual research review meetings this week. I am encouraged by the strides that you have all made in improving the research outlook in your units, and look forward to helping us achieve this growth goal.

 While finalizing your FY17 hiring proposals, please revise your "CALS Targets and Investments Needed Spreadsheets" to reflect the new target of 50% increase in research expenditures by 2025 from you unit's 2015 expenditure levels. The dates for finalizing and submitting your spreadsheets to Shane are the in attached memo of February 5.
