There are several interesting articles in this that I thought may be of interest to others. Particularly the one about who consumers trust for their food info.

Making complex food info relevant

Overwhelming scientific consensus says genetically modified (GM) foods are safe and that people contribute more to antibiotic resistance than animals, yet consumer skepticism about these and other issues is widespread, leaving those dedicated to improving lives through science-based technology and innovation asking, "Science says it's so, so why is there still debate?"

The Center for Food Integrity (CFI) has released new consumer trust research - "Cracking the Code on Food Issues: Insights from Moms, Millennials & Foodies" - that provides a roadmap for food system stakeholders to make complex, technical and controversial information relevant and meaningful to the decision-making process of today's consumers.

"This research provides guidance to the food system for overcoming the many communication barriers that keep consumers from integrating science-based information into their decisions," CFI chief executive officer Charlie Arnot said. "The food system can use CFI's new models developed through this research as a guide to connect with consumers, especially moms, millennials and foodies, but it will require communicators to embrace a new approach."

Sow's milk has potential to deliver medicine to piglets

Veterinary researchers at Iowa State University have devised a novel means of delivering pain medication to piglets through the milk of the mother sow as the piglets nurse.

It's a proof-of-concept study that could help pork producers reduce the stress and pain experienced by piglets that are castrated or have their tails removed without the need to inject each piglet with medicine.

Hans Coetzee, a professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine, said consumers are concerned about pain management during routine animal husbandry procedures.

So Coetzee - with colleagues Locke Karriker, an associate professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine, and postdoctoral research associate Jessica Bates - began studying the possibility of introducing pain medication into the feed of a sow, which would then pass it on to her piglets through her milk.

Coalition promotes balanced nutrition guidance

As the Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture finalize developing nutritional policies set to be released in 2015, a coalition of 18 food organizations called for a more balanced, practical and achievable dietary guidance.

The Back to Balance Coalition was formed in response to public policy efforts occurring at the local, state and national levels to malign and restrict certain foods when both scientific research and the nutrition community say such efforts are unlikely to work.

"Historically, we've seen shifts in dietary recommendations that have led to conflicting messages and confusion," said nutrition expert Carol Byrd-Bredbenner, Ph.D., RD. "These recommendations often have little to do with what Americans really eat, nor do they consider what working families could achieve given today's time and economic pressures."

Safety of biotech foods confirmed in House hearing

Genetically engineered foods are as safe their conventional counterparts was one consistent message repeated during the House Energy and Commerce Committee's hearing Wednesday on the Food and Drug Administration's role in regulation of genetically modified foods.

Although the debate has typically been fueled by deep emotions and rhetoric, Wednesday's hearing began an honest discussion about national mandatory labeling of essentially a breeding method - genetic engineering - on a packaged food label, explained one of the witnesses after the hearing, Alison van Eenennaam, an animal genomics and biotechnology specialist from UC Davis.

She testified that the consensus of the scientific community is that "there are no unique risks posed by this breeding method" and although consensus doesn't mean unanimity, it is a strong consensus of what she estimated 99 to 1 and much stronger than scientists' view on climate change.

Five top ag stories of 2014

By Chuck Jolley

It's the same old story: The more things change, the more they stay the same. Most of the top agriculture-related stories this year are variations on the same old stuff we were reading about in 2013 and 2012 and 2011 and before.

Farm bill. The "farm bill" is a nice shorthand name for a monster of a bill that gives everyone something to love and hate. It's supposed to be renewed every five years, but all the political maneuvering behind it usually stretches it out for another year or two. The "farm" part of the bill is actually one of the smallest pieces.

It's a huge and complex, multiyear piece of legislation that covers agricultural and food programs, including farm commodities, price and income supports, farm credit, international trade, agricultural conservation, research, rural development, bioenergy, foreign food aid and domestic nutrition assistance.

Farmers should celebrate their differences

By Megan Brown

One of the biggest misconceptions within agriculture is that we all do things the same way. We believe that because our region produces animals or crops in a certain way, that must be how all farmers do it. Some of us seem to have forgotten how varied and diverse our farming practices can be. Although farmers and ranchers do have many things in common, we are far from uniform.

We do all work to keep our animals and crops healthy and happy. We do all want to raise the best products we can, but because of differences in local climates, soils or markets, each producer must do what works best for his or her operation.

Agriculture must use many different methods and applications to suit its various niches.

School district alliance to procure antibiotic-free chicken

The Urban School Food Alliance, a coalition of the largest school districts in the U.S. - including New York City; Los Angeles, Cal.; Chicago, Ill.; Miami-Dade, Fla.; Dallas, Texas, and Orlando, Fla. - announced last week an antibiotic-free standard for companies to follow when supplying chicken products to its schools.

Serving nearly 2.9 million students daily, alliance members procure more than $550 million in food and supplies annually.

The coalition aims to use its joint purchasing power and influence to help drive down costs nationwide while setting higher standards for the quality of food served in its schools.
