[CED] 25 June CALS Cabinet meeting summary

All,

The CALS Cabinet met this morning in Forbes.  The meeting was lively and
much discussion took place.  Here is a brief summary of important items.

1)  2013 FY budget - The final budget summary from the university is
expected at CALS headquarters around July 20.  When received, CALS will
evaluate the impacts to the college and then distribute to the various
units.  While admin continues to expect a 5% state reduction, it is a wait
and see situation.  As Jeff Silvertooth pointed out last week, we should be
planning ahead, but not take any action until we are given finite
instruction on how to proceed.

2)  Ag Tourism - A general discussion of the benefits and risks of ag
tourism as a CALS area of focus occurred.  In general, opportunities exist,
but come at a cost.  There was some discussion about Extension outreach
efforts in this area and the successes that we have seen. More study is
needed before any decision to expand into this area can be made.

3)  Articulation - In the past, there has tended to be a separation, real
or imagined, between the various CALS departments, including Extension.
The need to improve communication so that all segments of the college can
better interact to the benefit of stakeholders would appear to be an
important area of focus.  This is one of the stated goals of Cooperative
Extension as outlined in the recent Phase III document sent out recently by
Extension leadership.  The use of genomic tools (like iPlant) by
Cooperative Extension could be high impact.  We need to foster better
communication between basic and applied scientists, probably through
department heads and Extension leadership.  To that end, there was
agreement that more conversations should take place at all levels.

I will be unable to attend next Monday's cabinet meeting because of
personal leave.
