Hi Hilda - 

Best way to grow hydrangea in Phoenix is on a wall - of photographs.  Like you, I have a LOVE for hydrangea (being from California).  But I quickly (to my extensive financial misfortune) came to realization that Phoenix is not the right place for that plant.  In my trials I managed to sustain them (16 months) through a mild summer and a generous spring, but still ultimately to a sad demise.  (even indoors in an office, I was able to maintain 'blues' for 11 months, succumbing to fungal gnats and diminished blooms.)

Unless you're willing to build a greenhouse, dedicate hours of effort, ample fertilizer, and filtered/bottled water, I'd advise against attempting hydrangea in Phoenix.

Has anyone else out there heard of a success story of hydrangea in Phoenix?
