The standard, Adam, for fertilization of Citrus as I have practiced for 40
years is printed on each bag of 21-0-0 Ammonium Sulfate; 1/3 third of the
yearly requirement applied in March, June and September at the drip line and
irrigated at least 36 inches deep confirmed with a brass soil probe with a
dull point and a 6 inch piece of an old garden handle on one end. When you
can sink your probe in the trench 36 inches deep in several places, shut the
water off. Don't irrigate again until the soil is quite dry at least 3
inches deep in the trench.

Desert soils are deficient in nitrogen. Without supplemental nitrogen, the
foliage will be a sickly yellow: Properly fed, a deep green. There may be a
similar hue if irrigation is lacking but nitrogen is the greening agent. If
there is an excess of nitrogen, it will usually show up as exceptionally
thick rind.

Your local nursery specialist should be able to advise you further.
