[Arid_gardener] Dipel

Hi Ellen,

I most recently used B.t. this past Autumn on corn and tomatoes. On the
tomatoes, one spray left the inchworms dead as doornails by the next day.
The same batch of spray had no noticeable effect on the corn borers, except
for those that I picked off and squashed on the pavement with the bottom of
the spray bottle. That was 100% effective. I wondered if perhaps I sprayed
the corn borers too late, or wasn't able to get the Bt on the parts of the
plants that they were eating, but my method was the same as had been
successful in years past.

There are a number of papers out about growing resistance of European Corn
Borers to Bt, theoretically a result of the widespread use of genetically
modified corn, and the transfer of that resistance to other critters. I
took the coward's way out and chose not to read them because there's nothing
I can do about it, and the whole subject of our industrial-agriculture
system just gives me a headache. If you're made of sterner stuff, you can
find them by a web search using "bt resistance."

I hope this helps,

Tyler

Subject: [Arid_gardener] Dipel

Hello all,

Hope everyone is doing great. My husband wanted to have me ask if anyone has
been having trouble with "Dipel" not working. I'm not sure that the brand
name we're using is "Dipel", but know it's the same thing. We had been using
a dry powder, which we've always had better luck with. We thought maybe it
wasn't working as well because the powder had gotten old, so we bought new,
but this time it's a liquid. We've sprayed several times and it's not
working either. We wondered if the worms are becoming resistant to the
stuff. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks and have a great day.

Ellen
