My palm tree in the front yard has splits around the trunk. Some are half and inch or deeper, and have what looks like sand inside the splits. 
I have the palms trimmed regularly of yellowing fronds, and it is on a drip system that waters for 15-20 minutes every morning. In the 10 years I have lived here I have not fertalized the palms. Is this splitting normal, or is there a problem?
