[Arid_gardener] palm stump

Hi Julie,
Burning out the roots of the palm is probably not necessary, and, depending
on the placement of your gas lines, etc, might be rather dangerous. Your
best bet is to have the person who removes the palm grind the stump for you.
Have them grind it several inches or more below ground level, then cover it
back over with soil. In the fullness of time, it will rot away. If you're
in more of a hurry, you might drill several 1-inch holes in the ground-out
stump and then soak it well with water before covering it up, then
occasionally dampen that area of soil to hasten the rotting.
I would steer you away from any of the commercial stump-rotting chemicals.
Others may have had better luck with them, but I have found them no more
effective than the water-holes-soil method. Unless it is somehow in your
way, the stump will cause no problems just sitting there deteriorating.
I hope this helps,
Tyler

I have a queen palm in my front yard that is so over grown and hits the roof
tiles. I need to take it out. I heard how deep the roots grow. Some one told
me of putting charcol on the stump and burning the roots out. What do you
suggest? Thanks
