The vision of the vertical farm requires technology advances in a number of areas. Two key relevant technologies that are rapidly emerging are robotics and wireless sensor networks. Robots in the form of self-driving vehicles, fixed manipulators, and automated infrastructure are being put into practice in commercial and research settings for orchards, vineyards, and greenhouses. At the same time wireless sensor network technology is making it increasingly more cost effective to densely measure biotic and abiotic parameters in production horticulture environments. He will discuss work in both of these areas over the past decade.
