<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">If you were unable to join us for last week’s July 15 Open Conversation regarding SARS-COV2, schools, and child safety, you can visit the link below for a recording. Dr.
Ernst has also provided some additional information on this topic:<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt">There has been a lot of press since we had our session related to kids and COVID-19 that shed a bit more light on the potential for children to transmit SARS-CoV-2. It is still pretty clear that kids older
than one are less likely to become seriously ill. However, this does not mean they cannot get infected. There are additional studies that demonstrate even asymptomatic people may have some lung damage during infection (though the duration and extent is not
well quantified). One of the current questions is how much kids can transmit the virus. There are a few new studies and outbreaks that indicate children can indeed transmit fairly well. There are more reports of summer camps; Georgia, Kansas and Texas, where
scores of children 7-18 have become infected. These reports have not been investigated and published thoroughly but since these are overnight camps, there is likely fairly close contact between the children and transmission among the kids cannot be discounted.
Next, there was a study out of Korea that tracked the contacts of nearly 6000 confirmed cases, including children. This study is published in EID and has received a fair bit of press
<a href="https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/10/20-1315_article"><span style="color:#0563C1">https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/10/20-1315_article</span></a> Their conclusion is that children who were index cases transmitted to others more than adults because
many were infected while schools were still open. Household contacts of children 10-19 appeared to be more likely to transmit to household contacts (sample size moderate); those 0-9 were less likely (but the sample size was quite small). It is unclear what
% of these are in the late teens (15-19) vs. the younger school age (10-14). There is also little information on the circumstances surrounding what went on in the homes – i.e. If this was with other children or who they went on to infect. They were similarly
likely to have non-household contacts infected. Clearly this indicates that some level of transmission from children, especially older children does occur. It was a bit of an unsatisfying study in the level of detail it provided on the methods and it was unclear
what measures to mitigate spread, if any, were in place in various households. More research is still needed to clarify but this is more evidence that children can transmit SARS-CoV-2.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
