To: All ALVSCE Employees
Good morning, everyone, I'm sorry this email is so long in coming. I took some vacation time that I would lose if I didn't take it—and I needed. Please everyone, do the same thing.
Of course, however, I came back to a massive email backlog. Now I am finally updating you on our first quarter budget update with Provost Ron Marks, CFO John Arnold and CBO Garth Perry that was held on Monday October 28 between 3:15 and 3:45 PM.
The Q1 information that was presented by the central budget office to us for the three largest ALVSCE units is on Compass here<https://compass.arizona.edu/alvsce-finances> under Quarterly Budget Review.
We were told that our Q1 performance was on target with our reduced Spending Authority. We were asked two questions about spending on unrestricted accounts, one about almost $190,000 for capital equipment in four of our academic units and the other about student support spending. We answered these after the meeting by email.
1. The capital equipment purchases were all initiated in FY24 but did not post until FY25. They are for existing labs or to support new faculty startups.
2. Wrt student support spending. These are student scholarships. To-date we have $4,000 in expenses on unrestricted funds. In FY24 we spent $89K of unrestricted funds. In FY24, CALES controlled set-aside accounts from program fees and differential tuition. In FY25 these set-aside accounts are centralized, coded as restricted, and are no longer college controlled.
We then had 15 minutes to present anything we wanted to present. The slide deck we presented is Q1 2025 Presentation.pptx at the same web link<https://compass.arizona.edu/alvsce-finances>. This slide deck has both data that we wanted to present, and our requests see (slide 7 and 9-12). We made those requests exactly as are written.
I will provide you with more information when I have it.
Regards
Shane
