Dear Colleagues,

Parker Antin has notified me that he will retire from the University of Arizona, leaving his administrative appointments as Associate Vice President, Research for the Division of Agriculture, Life and Veterinary Sciences, and Cooperative Extension and Associate Dean, Research for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, effective July 31, 2023.

Parker has dedicated over 30 years to research spanning early embryo development, development of cardiac and skeletal muscle, stem cell biology, and bioinformatics. While leading our research enterprise, Parker also served as PI for CyVerse and president of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, the largest coalition of biomedical research associations in the U.S.

Parker is a committed, professional, courageous leader who has transformed our research mission delivery, improving infrastructure and training opportunities and providing pilot support for novel ideas. Together with Parker, we have increased in funding and productivity over this past decade, with a 32% increase in sponsored research expenditures and a 26% increase in expenditures per research FTE. Parker has led a remarkable team including the highest quality pre-award and other services on campus. Reducing friction and raising morale, this team offers our faculty a strategic advantage. The impacts of our research are transformative.

Thank you, Parker, for your services to the University of Arizona. Your shoes will be extremely hard to fill.

As soon as I have permission, I will launch an international search for the next Associate Vice President, Research and Associate Dean, Research.

I must appoint an interim to these positions. Please email Bethany Rutledge (rutledge at cals.arizona.edu<mailto:rutledge at cals.arizona.edu>) with your nominations (including self-nominations) for Interim Associate Vice President, Research/Interim Associate Dean, Research by Friday, May 12. Nominations must include your rationale. Please ensure the nominee consents to be nominated and state that you have their consent in the nomination. Nominees must be full rank faculty. All emails are personnel records and will be confidential.

Regards,
Shane
