"The holiday must be substantive as well as symbolic. It must be more than a day of celebration . . . Let this holiday be a day of reflection, a day of teaching nonviolent philosophy and strategy, a day of getting involved in nonviolent action for social and economic progress."
-Coretta Scott King
Ways to Honor and Grow on MLK Day:
* The mission of UArizona's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration<https://diversity.arizona.edu/mlkcelebration> is to honor the legacy and the tenets set forth by Dr. King and his life examples of service and leadership. As a servant leader, Dr. King chose to commit his life to serve others. His leadership was grounded in supporting and expanding service for marginalized communities. Servant leadership exemplifies the Arizona Wildcat Community Core Values: integrity, compassion, exploration, adaptation, inclusion, and determination.
Through the week, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion celebrates the legacy of Dr. King with collaborations that explore MLK's vision for the United States, a week of service opportunities, and learning opportunities to explore inclusion and justice on campus.
* Learn about programs offered by the African American Student Affair's<https://aasa.arizona.edu/programs> office.
* Empower others through service and volunteering with local charities or volunteering with the donation drive at the MLK Celebration Week.
* Listen to Dr. King's "I have a dream"<https://www.npr.org/2010/01/18/122701268/i-have-a-dream-speech-in-its-entirety> speech and reflect on its meaning today, recognize the progress that has been made, and re-commit to achieve the progress yet to come.
* Learn about Dr. King's less famous speeches that addressed gender stereotypes, poverty, and privilege.
* Learn about unconscious bias, such as through the Harvard Implicit Association Test<https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/user/agg/blindspot/indexrk.htm>.
* Read a book by a black author, popular recommendations include Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, You Can't Touch My Hair: And Other Things I Still Have to Explain by Phoebe Robinson.
* Make personal growth and interpersonal connection a year-long activity.
* Consider what you can do to help the organizations you are a part of to become fully inclusive and anti-racist<https://philanos.org/resources/Documents/Conference%202020/Pre-Read%20PDFs/Continuum_AntiRacist.pdf>.
