Project SOAR is a 2-unit service-learning course (HED 397B) designed for those committed to providing mentoring for students at under-resourced middle schools in the Tucson community, in an effort to increase the academic achievement for these students. This course provides an introduction to research around learning and developmental factors as well as cultural, social and environmental factors that affect student academic achievement and the path to higher education.<br>
<br>
Although there is an academic component to this upper-division course, a majority of the time (2 hrs/wk) is spent mentoring at a local middle school (we serve 13 middle schools in the Tucson area, most of which are about a 20 min drive from campus) for a total of 25 hours per semester (this includes travel time & prep time). Carpooling is available, students DO NOT have to have a car.<br>

Arsenic in drinking water: it’s colorless, odorless, tasteless, and responsible for one in five deaths in Bangladesh today. Chemicals in plastics can mimic sex hormones. Early-life exposure to farm animals prevents childhood asthma. <br>
<br>
Environmental health scientists at the University of Arizona (UA) work at the cutting edge of understanding the relationships between environmental exposures, altered biological processes, and human disease. Now you have the opportunity to work with them in researching environmental health problems, through the EHS-TRUE program.<br>
<br>
The UA EHS-TRUE program is a prestigious, National Institutes of Health-funded undergraduate research training program, targeting students from backgrounds under-represented in the sciences, that will pay you to conduct environmental health science research with some of the leading experts in environmental health science. The program offers each participant two years of paid year-round training and research experience (35 hours/week for 12 weeks in both summer 2015 and summer 2016, and 15 hours/week during the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 academic years) in EHS-TRUE faculty mentors’ research groups to help students develop an understanding of environmental health sciences, to apply classroom learning to research in environmental health, and to aid in deciding on a career path. Students take an introduction to environmental health sciences course and an introduction to biomedical research careers course during their two years in the program and participate in activities (workshops, retreats, scientific conferences) to expand their research experience. The goal of EHS-TRUE is to prepare undergraduates from under-represented backgrounds to enter graduate programs in the environmental health sciences.<br>

If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, have a 3.0 GPA, will have at least 4 semesters left at University of Arizona after the current spring semester, are interested in pursuing research and aspire a graduate degree in a biomedical field, then you certainly should apply. The benefits and opportunities are MANY and there is NO prior research experience required.<br>

<div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:12px"><span style="font-family:tahoma,verdana,segoe,sans-serif">The syllabus includes discussions of the epidemiological and preclinical evidence related to the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet against chronic diseases (cancer, obesity, diabetes, etc) as well hands-on culinary experiences with Italian chefs and food experts. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the approach to food preparation, agriculture and community-based cultural activities characteristic to the Mediterranean region. Excursions include meetings with food producers, visits to olive oil, pasta, and cheese processing plants as well as touring of historic sites including the Roman downtown of Verona, and opportunities to attend musical and opera events. Verona is located in close proximity to Venice, Milan, and Florence.<br>

This 6-credit course is designed for students who have minimum junior standing, junior, and senior students in nutritional sciences, biological, physiological and related biomedical and social sciences, as well as undergraduate students who have a comparable background in the science and health fields.<br>
This unique program begins on May 19th 2014 with coursework at the University of Arizona in Tucson, then continues from May 25 through June 20th, 2014 in Verona, Italy. Students not residing in Tucson during the first week will have the option of online participation.
