<p><i><span style="font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"">Project SASS, Students are Sun Safe</span></i><span style="font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"">, is now a College of Public Health class:

<p><b><span style="font-size:16.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">CPH 497S/597S: Skin Cancer Prevention in the Community Setting</span></b><span style="font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif""><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";color:#333333">Project SASS is a skin cancer prevention and early detection outreach program through the University of Arizona Cancer Center's Skin Cancer Institute. <br>
<br>
This class uses a hybrid method of online modules and two in-person sessions to train students to represent the University of Arizona and the Skin Cancer Institute as a sun safety ambassador in the community. Students are taught skin and skin cancer basics,
prevention and early detection methods, health communication and teaching strategies, and how to present our middle/high school lesson and hands-on activities. <br>
<br>
From there, students apply their knowledge through experiential learning by providing a service for the community. Project SASS ambassadors complete 6 hours (per credit) of sun safety promotion in the Tucson area. These hours can be fulfilled in a number of
ways by: <br>
<br>
1. Presenting the Project SASS lesson to local middle and high school classrooms with other Project SASS students or volunteers (usually on Fridays during school hours)<br>
<br>
2. Engaging in community events on behalf of the Skin Cancer Institute, such as Cyclovia, Tucson Festival of Books, Living in Harmony with the Sun at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, etc. (often on weekends)<br>
<br>
3. Combining your Project SASS service with your interests and initiating your own project with the Skin Cancer Institute: Previous students have organized sorority and residence hall presentations, sun safety activities for youth at school fairs, social media
content, and sun screen stations at their sites of interest.<br>
<br>
Registration is open to any student, undergraduate or graduate: CPH 497S/597S.<br>
