See the BA Degree (#3) and Non-BA Degree (#2) Requirements in the current Catalog, http://catalog.arizona.edu/2012-13/policies/secondlang.htm. This “C” grade requirement has been in the Catalog since 1998, but it hasn’t been programmed in our Academic Advisement Reports. Those BS-Degree students who earn a “D” in SPAN 102, for example, are satisfying the requirement. The UWGEC believes this is wrong—members want the “C” grade enforced per the policy.

Before enforcement begins, members want to find out how many currently enrolled students have satisfied the Second Language Requirement with a “D” grade. Would you please run a query on this for UWGEC?

Those students who have already satisfied the requirement with a “D” should NOT be penalized by the policy enforcement—effective with courses taken in Fall 2013, regardless of the student’s primary Catalog.

UWGEC also wants to add the “C” grade requirement to the 4th semester-level courses that satisfy the BA Degrees. Members believe that this was an oversight that needs rectifying. Therefore, I’ll add the “C” grade to the BA Degree Requirement #2, effective with the 2013-14 Catalog, so this change won’t apply to currently enrolled students following earlier catalogs.

Roxie Catts will distribute this policy enforcement update to UAAC members, who can then notify their students who haven’t completed the Second Language Requirement. Non-BA Degree students who take the 2nd-semester course at UA and earn a D in Summer 2013 should satisfy the requirement, as should BA Degree students who take the 4th -semester course.

If you have questions about the enforcement of this policy, please let me know.

Thank you,

Celeste

..............

Celeste F.
