I thought this would be a good time to send a reminder about the prospectus to all of you as well.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The prospectus requirement became effective in the Fall 2010 catalog, so our current juniors are the first class to be impacted by it. The Honors Thesis Prospectus is meant to serve as a tool for students to outline their thesis plans and to develop shared expectations with their thesis advisors. The prospectus is also designed to encourage students to plan ahead for the thesis, rather than waiting until the last minute to develop a project and find an advisor. The Honors College requires that the prospectus be submitted by the last day of classes in the semester PRIOR to starting the thesis. This means that any student who is planning to start the thesis this fall should submit a prospectus by May 1<sup>st</sup>.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>We have just posted a revised version of the Honors Thesis Prospectus at <a href="http://www.honors.arizona.edu/students/Thesis.html">http://www.honors.arizona.edu/students/Thesis.html</a> . This document includes detailed thesis policies and instructions for writing the prospectus. If you’re meeting with a student who is planning to start an Honors thesis next semester, it would be great if you could remind them that they need to submit a prospectus and direct them to this form. Please also refer them to me with any questions about thesis policies, their progress in Honors, etc.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>You may have questions yourself as you’re reading through the prospectus form. In particular, you may notice our policy that only tenured or tenure-track faculty from the department in which the student is earning Honors are eligible to serve as thesis advisors. I understand that some departments allow non-tenure track faculty to advise theses, and that many departments also allow students to work with faculty in other departments. In these cases, we do defer to the department to make the final decision about who is eligible to advise a thesis. If we see that a student’s proposed advisor is someone who has regularly advised theses in the past or who has already been assigned a 498H number in your department, we will generally accept that as evidence that the department has approved this person as an advisor. If we are unsure whether an individual is eligible to advise a thesis, we will be contacting your department for more information.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Let me know if you have any questions about the prospectus.
