Good morning, colleagues!
As I shared in yesterday’s meeting, there are a few important updates to CALES ASEMS and our current messaging. I hope the information below provides helpful context and supports your continued work with our students!
The STEM Learning Communities (SLCs) are 1-unit, workshop-style success courses designed to welcome CALES students in STEM majors. Here’s how they’re structured:
________________________________
For First-Year Students:

  * Enroll in Success in STEM (SiS).
  * SiS is linked with one of the following:
▸ Any Math course
▸ CHEM 151
▸ ACBS 102A/B
  * Classes meet once a week for 50 minutes, and we’ll handle enrollment.

________________________________
For Community College Transfer Students:

  * Enroll in Research Readiness (no linked course required).
  *
NEW! Transfer students only take this one course.
  *
Classes meet once a week for 50 minutes, and we’ll handle enrollment.

________________________________
Continuing Services:

  * First-year students who continue into CALES ASEMS will take Research Readiness in the spring.
  * Transfer students are also encouraged to continue in CALES ASEMS, where both will receive:
▸ Individualized guidance
▸ Access to research, internship, and campus opportunities
▸ Community events, support and so much more!

________________________________
ASEMS Benefits for All SLC Participants:
Students enrolled in any STEM Learning Community also receive full access to ASEMS resources, including:

  * Individualized academic/career guidance (not any academic advising)
  *   One-on-one tutoring by a Think Tank–trained peer tutor
  * Access to ASEMS student lounges
  * Individualized partnership with both program staff (that’s me! 😊) and our amazing faculty collaborators: Drs. Jerry Lopez and Jen Teske
  * Invitations to all ASEMS events — from professional development and academic workshops to community-building and fun socials

________________________________
Eligibility & Inclusion:

  * NEW! Open to all STEM majors in CALES
(We’re currently working on including HDFS and PFFP — stay tuned!)
  *
We prioritize:
▸ First-generation college students
▸ Community college transfers
▸ Pell-eligible students
▸ Veterans
  * That said — all interested students are welcome this semester!

________________________________
Connecting Students:

  * I host daily drop-in info sessions (1–3 per day) — all listed in Trellis.
  * My Teams status is updated daily with session times.
  * If those times don’t work, students can text (520-621-5402) or email (teresasosa at arizona.edu) and I’ll connect with them directly.
