Subject: [uaac] Clarification on Repeat Policy for U of A vs. Transfer Courses

Hi all,

I want to clarify the University of Arizona’s undergraduate repeat policy as it relates to transfer coursework:

  * The repeat policy applies only to University of Arizona courses.
  * Transfer courses do not impact cumulative GPA or remove the grade from any U of A courses.

For example, if a student fails a U of A course and later transfers in an equivalent course, the transfer course will count toward earned units and applicable degree requirements. However, the original failed U of A attempt will remain in the U of A cumulative GPA. This approach aligns with the institutional Repeating a Course & Grading for Repeated Courses policy<https://catalog.arizona.edu/policy/courses-credit/grading/course-repeat>, which states:

When undergraduate students repeat Regular Graded undergraduate courses, the student's GPA reflects only the highest grade earned in the repeated course. Credit is earned only for the completion that is included in the GPA.

The Grades & the Grading System<https://catalog.arizona.edu/policy/courses-credit/grading/grading-system> policy defines regular graded courses as A, B, C, D, and E—grades that are included in the GPA calculation. Because transfer courses are not regular graded courses at the U of A, they cannot replace a U of A grade in the cumulative GPA.

UAccess Student has been configured to implement these policies.

We are updating our supporting webpages to clearly state that the benefit of grade replacement applies only to U of A coursework repeated with U of A coursework.

Please let me know if you have any questions/concerns. Students or advisors who need support with the repeat policy should contact reghelp at arizona.edu<mailto:reghelp at arizona.edu>

Thanks,
Alex
