Dear advising directors,

I'd like to share with you an update regarding MATH 100/SAS 100X and VA Education Benefits (i.e. the G.I. Bill).  We've been working with students who have a pending certification for the fall term and have heard from a few advisors with additional questions.  We've been in touch with both the Department of Mathematics and the Schedule for Success team as we know this not ideal for our students.  This is a recent VA update impacting students in Fall 2024 for the first time.

If you could share with advisors on your teams who work with first-year students, that would be helpful.  Below is the standard response that we've been sharing with students.

You enrolled in SAS 100AX and/or MATH 100 in the Hybrid, Live-Online, or Online Learning Formats and unfortunately this format of remedial course is not approved for VA benefits.

We will continue your certification process without SAS 100AX and/or MATH 100.  If you are eligible for a different Math course<https://www.math.arizona.edu/academics/placement>, please identify an option to switch to an In Person course, or a non-remedial hybrid section.  If needing to continue in MATH 100/SAS 100AX we recommend looking at your course schedule to see if you can enroll in more units to take your total non-remedial to over 12 units which would allow for you to be certified at 12 units and cover the associated tuition charges.  If making changes to your schedule, please remember to resubmit your certification request<https://registrar.arizona.edu/support-services/military-connected-benefits-certifications/va-benefits-veterans-and-dependents>.  Please reply to this email (veterans at arizona.edu<mailto:veterans at arizona.edu>) if you need assistance with an updated certification.

If you haven't already, we recommend filing your FAFSA and reviewing financial aid to cover any non-certifiable course. Our Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid<https://financialaid.arizona.edu/> can answer any questions you may have about your financial aid eligibility and/or awards.
