Thank you, Nancy, for this follow-up to our Sept. 15 discussion on this topic, and for your time in reviewing together.

I contacted ASUA directly to the email address provided on their site (Sept. 20, to asua at email.arizona.edu) to request additional data regarding the ASUA legal aid services and specifically:

  * the frequency of use while the program was active.
  * the categories of legal aid sought while the program was active.
  * population: undergraduate and graduate/professional student groups' use.
  * campus of the students seeking this resource: main campus, Online, and other UArizona campuses.

Unfortunately, the response received was a template response referring my inquiry to community legal aid resources which is the same info on their site now, and I have not received a response with information regarding the above points, when I responded to their response also on Sept. 20. Today I emailed Doan Goolsby the CALES ASUA elected representative in hopes of their sharing any contact information that they may have so that I may continue my outreach for additional information to provide to CALES so that this resource may be further explored. Any new and relevant information I receive I will share here.

I am grateful for future conversations, and for feedback already received, and time shared with me by colleagues to explore this opportunity in efforts of continuing collaboration and exploration towards the shared goal of further supporting our students. Thanks everyone 🤩

Greetings Danielle,

Thank you again for sharing widely that this service has ended. As a follow up to our conversation, I wasn’t aware. The service they offered was a one-half hour legal consultation free of charge. Not having much experience in this area, I also appreciated what you shared others had responded.

Supporting students holistically is something we aim for as part of guiding, coaching, mentoring them in their path towards degree attainment and overall preparation as individuals. The holistic support can entail many variables similar to how one may define students success – it can be individualized based on the student – and this is another good reminder to continue exploring further support opportunities. As we discussed, an alternative could also be having some type of general funding support with structure overseen by a collegewide committee. These funds could assist student requests (urgent/non-urgent) that are impactful to a student’s path towards degree progression.

Am including others on the email for potential further insight. If you learned anything further in-between the time we spoke please share.

Thanks again, Danielle for your advocacy.

Best,
Nancy

Hello Nancy, Agvisors and student supporters on this listserv,

Sharing something I learned today:

ASUA student legal services<https://asuatoday.arizona.edu/what-we-do/student-legal-services> ended Feb. 2023. I believe students not having this resource leaves a gap in related support and something that I would like to raise to CALES for consideration of providing a similar service to CALES students.

Having a free, CALES provided, legal resource for students would be beneficial for them and their progression towards degree completion. Community resources shared on the above linked site are helpful, however, having UArizona provided support in this way is necessary especially to continue efforts towards a holistic perspective of support for our students.

This resource being made accessible to them and without a charge, would align with CALES strategic intent of being "the most effective, efficient and responsive<https://alvsce.arizona.edu/about/strategy>...enterprise on campus" towards the goal of being the "most sought-after place to be a part of", aligning with CALES CAS strategic plan mission of "increase retention, persistence and graduation", and alignment with one of UArizona's values, adaptation<https://www.arizona.edu/purpose-mission-values/adaptation>, "embracing change and be open to alternative ways of doing things".

Is there any way to explore providing a similar free service to CALES students?

If others know of any UArizona provided service similar to the now closed Legal Aid services please share, as I was unsuccessful in locating other resources than the site ASUA linked above. I have a student needing this support right away and that is how I learned that the ASUA legal aid unit has closed. Thank you for your consideration of exploring and implementing a CALES legal aid resource.

Thank You,
