Dear Nancy,

Is AGvisors retreat still planned for May 9? Is there any way that the retreat agenda can allow for time to integrate the below session into our day from 2-3:15? And, of course, if others are interested in the webinar. The webinar appears to me to be timely and an informative session, I think attending it would be good for each of us to learn the strategies shared. Thanks for considering this and if possible, making time during the retreat to allow us to view the webinar.

Thank You,

Dear Colleagues:

The end of the term brings celebrations and challenges. Based on my experiences in 25 years of teaching, there is no more stressful time for students and all those who support them, including advisors, graduate coordinators, TAs, and instructors.

To help members of our community develop strategies to support students, the University has invited Katharine Manning<https://click.comms.arizona.edu/?qs=61fddfe27e4e8f294f85cb9e429b81808273ad6780d4d90b8289c8133cc6136c0e1e55622bdb877fd8c246b7c65097d1b204c2c7e0d293de>, who worked in Victim’s Services at the Department of Justice for 15 years, to present a webinar entitled Student Trauma in the University: A Better Response for instructors, teaching assistants, advisors, graduate coordinators, and others who are in highly student-facing positions. This webinar will take place on Tuesday, May 9, from 2-3:15 pm Tucson time.

________________________________

Dr. Manning’s abstract follows.

The past six months have been uniquely challenging, but we have always had students experiencing trauma and distress, and unfortunately, always will. Trauma can affect understanding, engagement, wellbeing, productivity, and creativity. When we support students in trauma, though, we can enhance trust, wellbeing, and learning outcomes. In this session, gain the skills to recognize and respond appropriately to students in trauma and distress while also respecting boundaries and protecting yourself from secondary trauma and compassion fatigue.

I hope you will be able to join us for this webinar!

With all my best,
Lisa Elfring
