Everyone,
Unit Heads may have already received the message below from the Provost today. Not sure about everyone else, so here it is, FYI. Should be an interesting next 3-4 weeks, but I appreciate that she has given us the flexibility to make temporary adjustments as circumstances warrant.

Subject: [u-caac] Managing instruction for Spring 2022
Please see below message from Provost Folks:
*************************************
Dear Heads, Chairs and Directors,
As we enter the Spring 2022 semester, and the omicron-fueled surge of the pandemic, we will need to lead with an emphasis on our core values of adaptability and compassion. It is likely that each of you may be faced with a need to make some temporary, rolling, adjustments to the instructional delivery modes for your academic programs in order to accommodate instructors, TAs or staff who have tested positive (with or without symptoms), or those who have a need to stay home to be with a young child or elder who needs care following a positive test.
I am writing to clarify a couple of related items that have been raised to me.
* Individual faculty / instructors must work with you, or the appropriate Program Director, directly, to decide what adjustments are appropriate if they temporarily cannot teach in the normal course modality due to illness or caregiving, just as they should for any other interruption to instruction (e.g., due to other illness, travel to conferences, etc.). Please ask your faculty and instructors to reach out to you/Program Directors immediately in the event of a change in their circumstances that would necessitate any temporary adjustments in teaching modality. This is vitally important so that we have equitable outcomes for people across your department and across campus.
* Any adjustments to the planned instructional modality should be temporary, and map to the individual circumstances, while ensuring that our commitments to students are upheld to the best extent possible.
* Please ensure that you are involved in the communications to the impacted students, to ensure that we have as much uniformity as possible in the messages from your department.
* Remember that we should not ever share someone's health care status unless the instructor is comfortable doing so. As needed, messages to students should reference "needed COVID mitigation measures" rather than spelling out any specific cause for the temporary change. See sample scripts for communicating with students here<https://arizona.app.box.com/folder/153330347682?s=rk1y9p4j1rqjbg2cslc2oiudluo6894c>.
* Please note that, per the CDC<https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/your-health/quarantine-isolation.html>, Fully Vaccinated individuals do NOT need to quarantine if they are a close contact with a covid-infected person UNLESS they develop symptoms, so generally our instructors will not need to make adjustments if they are deemed close contacts - other than potentially to meet caregiving needs.
* The Pandemic Academic Coordination<https://provost.arizona.edu/content/pac> (PAC) workgroup will hold an information session<https://arizona.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYuf-6qqTsvHNW4RyyM5OPp2SgFNWm2aA-1> for Dept Heads, Directors & Chairs on Jan. 12, 2022 from 1-2 p.m. A session for Faculty and Instructors will be on Jan. 13 from 3-4 p.m. Please share registration<https://arizona.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYtcOmgqTMqH9JlPNqIU6N_WXEJPcVqTSx4> information.
* The Academic Instruction Resources<https://provost.arizona.edu/content/academic-instruction-resources> page has been updated for Spring 2022.
I recognize that we are likely to have a few weeks of disruptions for each of you and your departments, and I sincerely appreciate your efforts to manage through it while balancing the needs of all involved. It is so important for our students that we do our very best to manage any needed changes calmly and methodically, for which I thank you.
Please do raise any questions or particular challenges with your dean so we can be sure that we reach equitable approaches wherever possible.
Sincerely,
Liesl
