Everyone,
Below is some information from Cynthia Demetriou that reflects the latest intel from students (across campus, not just CALS) about their course experiences thus far. Please distribute this to your teaching faculty. We'll also get the word out to students about the resource links through CALS social media and our advising team.
FYI, on a related note and not for distribution yet, but it appears that it will be awhile before we escalate our in-person instruction to stage 2. This was the general consensus from today's CAAC meeting. So, these online struggles that students are having with some of their courses may continue for awhile. If we do move to Stage 2 and eventually Stage 3, I expect the problems highlighted below will worsen because they involve the logistics of a student having to switch quickly (less than 10-15 minutes) from an in-person class to a quiet space for the subsequent online class, and vice versa. At the moment, we just don't have many in-person classes being offered, but with subsequent stages that will change quickly.

Here are some quick notes we are hearing from students. Please share with faculty and staff.

* We are hearing of many students driving while in online classes. If at all possible, please encourage faculty to announce to classes that this is unsafe and not conducive to learning.
* We are continuing to hear that students are struggling with transitioning between in-person and online activity in a timely manner. Please encourage flexibility whenever possible.
* Some faculty are requiring additional online platforms for course submission that require paid subscriptions. While this is a typical semester concern expressed by students, please note the changed economy and, if possible, encourage faculty to avoid this additional expense.

Subject: Student Feedback for Faculty and On-Campus Employers
Good morning-
I just wanted to share some feedback that I heard yesterday and that I hope you can share with your teams.
We have heard that students are struggling to transition from in-person to online when they are on campus. For example, a student has an in-person class and then 10 minutes after class they have to be in a quiet space to set-up and login online for work or to transition to an online class.
We are working with students to recommend strategies. It will take some time for students to figure out how to naigate this transition. In the meantime, can you help by asking faculty and employers to be flexible/acknowledge the challenge these transitions present?
I appreciate your support very much. We are hearing stories of challenge from our students but also many stories of resilience and perseverance!
