Subject: [oac] Placement (Math, Second Language, Writing) Orientation Updates
Hello all!
Tina Moore, Karina Rodriguez, and I (Erin Whittig) saw some questions in the chat window during Tuesday's OAC meeting, so we would like to share some information with you all about how we are addressing placement (information and advising) for the upcoming online orientations.
But first, let's all channel this chihuahua getting a $25 spa treatment:

Ok, now that we're all in the right mood:
Information for Advisors
Math, Writing, and Second Language placement folks will be providing an internal FAQ for advisors to consult during orientation. We'll email this out in the next couple weeks!
We are hoping we can create and "push" a placement module to every college's D2L. The module will contain information to help students determine whether they need to meet with us, as well as the instructions on how to receive advising (i.e., Zoom links, times available, etc.)
Requests and proposals
It was indicated at the OAC meeting that we might be able to see the communications being sent out to students. This would be very useful; we hope we can see these soon!
Finally, we have heard a proposal to create an Orientation Slack, where all folks involved with Orientation sessions could message one another (either prior to orientation sessions, or day of). With orientation going digital, we know how important it is that we have an easy and central way to communicate. Some benefits of Slack:
* Conversations can be organized by unit/concern (e.g., #financialaid; #placement; #courseregistration)
* Conversations can be both public and private (channels can include all members or only selected members)
Placement folks all use this already in our individual units. We are happy to create our own Slack for orientation so that advisors/others can message us (unless New Student Orientation team would like to create a centralized one), but we wonder if it might be beneficial to have a more centralized one.
We would love to hear your thoughts, questions and feedback! Please let Tina, Karina, and/or me know if you have any ideas/concerns about any of the above.
Best,
Erin, Tina, and Karina (Writing, Math, Second Language Placement)
