Subject: From Provost Folks: Updated guidance on for-credit Experiential Learning Activities

Dear Colleagues,

Thank you for your patience as we waited for the updated University Covid-19 guidance for credit-bearing experiential learning coursework to be finalized. The guidance and a new "Assessment of Recommended Covid-19 Workplace Risk Management Protocol" have now been released by Provost Folks. Her message to the Deans can be found below with the guidance and assessment attached. NOTE: There have been changes from the early drafts of the process and documents that we reviewed at our Internship Council meeting in June.

The attached documents provide the current conditions which the University determined must be met for credit-bearing in-person internships to occur. Note: as we discussed in the early June meeting, your academic unit can decide to only allow credit-bearing remote internships; and/or to suspend offering non-required internships. Much like the spring, if your unit offers internships for academic credit, it is also prudent to plan for alternative educational experiences, if internships are disrupted and/or to allow student to progress towards degree completion. As you consider the best path forward for your program and your students given these new guidelines, please speak with your academic unit leadership.

I anticipate that some of you may be interested in discussing this finalized guidance, and thus, I'm hosting Internship Council Office Hours next Tuesday (7/7) at noon. There will be no planned agenda or presentation, but rather a chance to drop-in for a dialogue with our community of practice. A meeting invitation with Zoom access info will be sent later today.

Finally, it would be remiss of me to end without acknowledging Abra McAndrew and her work in this incredibly challenging project to address the wide-ranging needs of our academic units while also considering limits set forth by the situation. Thank you Abra!

Best,
Stephanie - Internship Council Fellow

Subject: Updated guidance on for-credit Experiential Learning Activities

Dear deans,

I am writing to share that there is updated guidance now posted on the main COVID-19 Mitigations page for operating for-credit experiential learning activities. I ask that you share this update out to your heads / chairs / directors / program directors as needed.

The guidance is in three pieces (attached here for ease of distribution).

  1. High-level guidance for students and faculty on process.
  2. A form for students who will to work in non-UA worksites to complete with their placement supervisor, to be shared back to their program coordinator at UA.
  3. Guidance for departments on considerations for structuring the placements.

Note that we have tried to accommodate the needs of all of our disciplines here, and I hope (hope!) that the excellent and detailed work of the representatives from each of your units has met this goal. That said, as issues arise, please do bring them forward for review.

With thanks,

Liesl
