Everyone,
Below see the message that came from the Registrar's office over the weekend, and my additional guidance to CALS academic unit heads. Since then, we should all have received a memo from the Provost (yesterday afternoon) that how the in-person re-opening of campus will roll out in stages. On August 24, only "essential" classes will convene in person, with all other classes starting online for one or more weeks, until the state/local health statistics prompt the administration to progress to Stage 2 and eventually Stage 3 for larger classes. With this latest memo, I think we are now reaching a point that nearly all of the uncertainties about the start of classes have been resolved.
I thought you might be particularly interested in the link with FAQs for instructors. This gives you a pretty good idea of classroom conditions once we start.
We'll be making some decisions soon about what re-entry means for our office and all CAS staff, so stay tuned!
I hope everyone is staying healthy and managing to enjoy a little bit of down time before classes gear up again.

Everyone,
Below is a very helpful roundup of particulars regarding campus re-entry for teaching, sent late Friday afternoon by Alex Underwood, the UA Registrar. Please read through it carefully.
Especially useful are the FAQs for instructors that were developed by the Teaching and Learning re-entry group. The situation is beginning to gain some definition, although we've learned by now that specifics can change - and there are still 4 weeks before the start of classes. Still, I find it re-assuring to have many of these details nailed down, and I hope you will, too.
I think the biggest uncertainty is whether all, some or none of our two modes of in-person classes will actually be offered in-person on opening day. The Provost has asked the Associate Deans to start messaging to faculty the possibility of a phased re-opening (ramp up) that would involve online classes the first couple of weeks, before reverting to the in-person modality. Apparently, they are going to make a call on this based on state/county health statistics. I don't know when. It is possible they will mandate online only for the ramp-up period. Or, they may give faculty the option, which creates a heavy communication burden on everyone to ensure students know where they are supposed to go that first week. Or, the stats may improve sufficiently in the next two weeks that they remove the option of an online opening altogether. Your guess is as good as mine at this point. Note that because a final decision has not been made, there has been no messaging to students at all about this. Please do not make any announcements to your students one way or the other until we hear more from the Provost.

A couple notes/thoughts that I hope help:
1. Instructor FAQ
* The Teaching & Learning re-entry group worked on a number of FAQs for instructors and I see they just got posted online at: https://covid19.arizona.edu/instructor-faq
i. The categories include logistics on campus, in the classroom, technology, communication with students, and courses modalities.
* There are more FAQs that will be posted as they are known/approved
1. Masks
* The classroom committee is working with Enrollment Communications on a video that will be available for faculty to post in D2L for students about how to be in a physical classroom and the norms/expectations of being in the space which will include information about traffic patterns, release, and that noncompliance is a code of conduct violation.
i. It is the same creative group that did the class formats video (here<https://arizona.wistia.com/medias/lqj5u0xwdk>) and we hope the tone will be fun and similar to a Airline safety video you watch before takeoff
1. Modality Changes/Thresholds
* I've had a few emails with Liesl over the past day or so about the threshold of in-person/flex to live online/iCourse and any adjustments.
i. We are holding to our % goal/thresholds
ii. It is ok to move more classes from In-Person to Flex In-Person to further reduce the amount of in-person classes
* These requests RCS will process without going through Associate Dean
iii. It is ok to add/switch additional sections of Live Online to meet student demand - as long as it is individual sections and not moving the whole course out of current offerings.
* All moves to live online will need to come from the Associate Dean/Deans office.
1. Students who will not be here for the whole semester - class selection
* For Undergraduate students the written message has been consistent that they should choose iCourses or Live Online sections. The current FAQ on the registrar website (here<https://www.registrar.arizona.edu/fall-2020-information-and-updates>) is:
i. Am I able to take all of my classes online?
* All courses will provide options for students who are unable to come to campus due to illness or other temporary circumstances, as well as for graduate students who may need to remain remote for the duration of the semester. Undergraduate students planning to learn remotely online should enroll in Live Online or iCourses but can request a special exemption if needed for degree progress or completion. Exceptions are not guaranteed and may not be possible for some courses. Students should connect with their academic advisor <https://student.trellis.arizona.edu/> and review the information below on how to adjust their schedule.
ii. Can I change my schedule?
* You can adjust your selected classes through UAccess Student Center <https://uaccess.arizona.edu/> to meet your individual needs. Please connect with your academic advisor<https://student.trellis.arizona.edu/> to determine what options will help you continue on your path to graduation.

iii. Will anything else change?
* Due to the evolving nature of situation, some classes may still have updates prior to the beginning of the semester. Students are encouraged to check their schedule and connect with your advisor again as the start of term draws closer to make sure your schedule continues to align with your needs and preferences.
iv. Why does my In-Person or Flex In-Person class have a Live Online portion?
* In-Person and Flex In-Person classes will finish the in-person meetings by Thanksgiving, with the remainder of the class being held in the Live Online format.
* The added meeting pattern is for any physical class meetings and is shown in the Meeting Information area of the Class Details on your schedule
* Independent Study, Practicum, Dissertation, Directed Research, and similar classes do not have a physical location will not have the extra meeting line for Live Online.
* I think one of the largest confusions is this is this seems slightly incongruent with the way the formats were described at the press conferences. Liesl has asked some folks to come up with a communication/clarity message - hope to get something out to all advisors and others Monday.
