Dear Members of CAAC,

This email provides an update on the status of the new Degree Search tool on Arizona.edu<http://arizona.edu/>. Although a bit long, we wanted to be sure you had the details.

As you know, prospective students place a high priority on information about majors and degrees on university websites. Our prior Degree Search site was developed in 2013 and has needed a significant revamp for some time. We have been working in earnest to develop a plan to replace Degree Search and improve its content and functionality, initially focusing on 1) adding new features needed by perspective students and 2) maintaining the current level of service and information for enrolled students. Key participants in planning have included: Enrollment Management, UITS, Curriculum office, Registrar’s office, and the Advising Resource Center. We imagine future phases focused on the needs specific to enrolled students that would expand planning and prioritization discussions to strategic partners like CAAC, UAAC and advisors.

The Degree Search project currently underway was launched in the fall of 2019. The goal is to create a modern, mobile responsive and interactive platform that replaces the existing Degree Search, and adds value to in-state transfer students who want to understand how their transfer credit articulates into the University curriculum. This project is broken into several releases, as outlined below:

  1. R1 (Dec 2019): Replace majors A-Z, including major details pages using current data (no new content)
  2. R2 (Jan 2020): Filter majors A-Z by location, college, level of math and second language (no new content)
  3. R3 (Feb 2020): Prospective students can log-in using social identities and favorite majors (no new content)
  4. R4 (Mar 2020): Transfer credit upload and articulation (uses existing articulation rules)
  5. R5 (Mar 2020): Enhanced browse and search (new content – please see creation and vetting process below)

Creation of the new content for R5 is being led by Enrollment Marketing & Communication with an outside company, Casual Astronaut, and in partnership with College marketers (who have agreed to include their academic counterparts in vetting). This process began in May 2019 at a meeting with Associate Deans to discuss the taxonomy and interest categories into which majors would be grouped. Since then, Casual Astronaut has worked with each college (usually the senior marketer) to build new program descriptions for each major. College marketers have been asked to obtain approval from relevant program leadership as the content is being developed; and we will require final sign off from a dean or a dean’s designate before any content is published.

The objective is to have these new program descriptions serve as the official program description that will populate the catalog as well as Degree Search, and thus they need to be developed with accuracy, academic and marketing impact in mind. This content will be subject to the annual review process that is currently in place for catalog updates/advisement reports. Governance policies around changes to this content are still in the works, and we welcome any input you have related to ongoing content changes and reviews.

Thank you for your support of this important project. We are confident that it will help us present our academic programs more effectively, and ultimately help students find their place at the University of Arizona.

Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.
