Hello everyone,
We have some wonderful events, workshops and programs happening at the DCC and in Tucson in the coming weeks: Our visit from Matthew Wangeman - a professor of disability studies at NAU, the DCC's ABLEISM 101 workshop series, the first Brown Bag event of the year from the Disability Studies Initiative, the continuation of the DCC's discussion group Sip 'n' Crip, and Deaf Awareness Week events in Tucson.
Matthew Wangeman Visit
We are excited to invite you all to join us for the upcoming visit from Matthew Wangeman. Matthew is a professor of disability studies from Northern Arizona University, and he will be visiting the U of A on October 16th and 17th. This is a great opportunity to further connect with NAU, and to collaborate to expand disability studies and support for disabled students, staff and faculty in Arizona.
Event schedule for his visit:
October 16th Wednesday
12-2:30pm Lunch Discussion: Disability Studies in Arizona
Location: Disability Cultural Center, Highland Commons, Rm D217
12:00-1:30pm: Grab lunch, discussion with Matthew & students, staff and faculty at the U of A

3-5pm Campus Access Walk

3-4pm: Exploration of campus in groups led by the Universal Design team

ABLEISM 101 Workshop Series
Ableism 101 is a four part workshop series by the Disability Cultural Center aimed at providing base knowledge about disability identity, culture and activism. Through the following workshops, participants will learn about ableist terminology, microaggressions, disability activism history, how to create accessible spaces and events, and about the roots of disability justice work.
The Ableism 101 Workshop series consists of four 1-hour workshops all on Tuesdays from 3-4pm in the Disability Cultural Center located in Highland Commons Room D217.

Part 1: October 15: What is Ableism? What is Disability?
Part 2: October 22: (Brief) History of Disability Activism & Disability Rights
Part 3: October 29: Creating Access & Universal Design
Part 4: November 5: Disability Justice, Access Intimacy & Care Webs
Spring Session:
Part 1: January 21: What is Ableism? What is Disability?
Part 2: January 28: (Brief) History of Disability Activism & Disability Rights
Part 3: February 4: Creating Access & Universal Design
Part 4: February 11: Disability Justice, Access Intimacy & Care Webs

DSI Brown Bag Discussion
For the first Disability Studies Initiative brown bag event, Sav Schlauderaff will be presenting their research in a talk entitled "Disability, Fatness & At-Home Genetic 'Health' Tests".
Sav will be discussing their work about 23andMe's at-home Health + Ancestry genetic testing kits and how these kits impact and target fat, disabled, and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) people disproportionately for extractive research.

Sip 'n' Crip Discussions
This is a weekly discussion group for disabled students, led by disabled students*. We will discuss topics relating to the disability community and disabled identity. We will provide drinks, snacks, and a space to talk and build community. We hope to see you there, and feel free to share this flyer and event with your friends and colleagues!
*this group is open to all students with disabilities, diagnoses, chronic illnesses, or those who want a space to discuss mental health.
