Service Spotlight
Members of the Marana team recently volunteered at the Tucson Botanical Gardens for United Way Days of Caring. We were also able to sponsor this city wide event. Rolling up our sleeves together with hundreds of other volunteers across the city was an amazing experience. Check out the photos here. <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001LnMJ2TTOCnv8rwdTYU9UvfChybyMHXYKqIYAt7c3fRZ_DYzyo8RQs8WE2UjuWPagRUNNq_16mo02WPriqRfmIJOSI69a3kXDz0xeeNLczjo34PjpJHKKmQEN2wIWQiSuOy4Qhcivn64H_awQ2Pj_PiqQnu0eevE4W4PHw_KEthAs1Q_cTGW7Fiz7BY2Kdr7ip7V8o-ZJ_uqN1u3fXvPh_RjcpiaodE1kSFI_vtASXISy7M6lXmanVrtoJRzzDn-x_RYt-NTsNxS5gYAznKTolA==&c=QP427WrUed-Dq8JWHRvaRdSWCSIqojdSMJPQPw4JPYxVlMevBX5dMg==&ch=zSC_QbCqN6dSopkIHHrWHJUT3uA8EQgkgWmTukUR8oT-4FIoF3jWWA==>

Making Memories in Marana
The Marana team sponsored a special day at the Marana Pumpkin Patch--Making Memories Day 2019. This is a day set aside for special needs students from across the area to enjoy free of charge. This is the second year we've been able to help make this day happen along with other sponsors. Thanks to the Post Family for making this day part of your community commitment!

Planting Native Seeds
Written by Bayer Marana Intern Ch'Ree Essary. Ch'Ree was our Science Communication Intern for summer, 2019.
The 40 acres of farmland surrounding the site of the Bayer Protected Culture Site in Marana, Arizona were planted with seeds native to Arizona in May.
According to Marana Site Lead Matt Lingard, native seeds were the most sustainable choice environmentally and economically.
“Native seeds are going to be best suited to growing in a non-irrigated environment,” Lingard said. “With the type of soil we have, with the amount of moisture we receive, native seeds have evolved to deal with those sorts of situations.”
Lingard said this effort was meant to re-establish the native Arizona desert habitat.
“The goal is then that over the subsequent couple of rainy seasons we have, the seeds will germinate and take root and we’ll get established a population of native wildflowers that will start to reform some of the native landscape,” Lingard said. “Then overtime we will get bigger species like creosote and mesquite bosque moving back in to some of these spaces.”
The planting of these seeds also had sustainability benefits.
“[Planting these seeds] controls erosion and control dust blowing. We want to have some plant mass down to keep things in place,” Lingard said. “Part of it is our commitment to sustainability and to making sure we have native plants that native insects and animals can take advantage of.”
Hydroseeding was also the more economical choice compared to spreading gravel or landscaping the 40 acres. “In the long run, it’s the most economical and sustainable way of managing that amount of land,” Lingard said.
