Subject: [inclusivex] Land Acknowledgement Statement

Dear UA Community Partners,

With the Fall 2019 semester around the corner, we will soon be welcoming back returning and new UA students, faculty and staff. This is a great opportunity to continue informing the community about the ancestral homelands that the UA resides on. In consultation with Karen Francis-Begay, Assistant Vice President of Tribal Relations, we provide students, faculty and staff with a statement that can be included in online student resources, email signatures, and outreach efforts. We cannot thank Karen enough for her wisdom and expertise in assisting our office.

We encourage the UA community to utilize the following statement below. It is important we all do our part and ensure we truly practice inclusivity and create awareness throughout the campus. This is a living statement that may change over time based on consultation with Tribal Relations. We will update our community partners of any recommended changes as they become available through Karen Frances-Begay and her office.

The University of Arizona sits on the original homelands of indigenous peoples who have stewarded this land since time immemorial. Aligning with the university's core value of a diverse and inclusive community, it is an institutional responsibility to recognize and acknowledge the people, culture and history that make up the Wildcat community. At the institutional level, it is important to be proactive in broadening awareness throughout campus to ensure our students feel represented and valued.
Should you or any colleagues have any questions regarding this statement, please do not hesitate to contact Teresa Graham Brett, Assistant Vice Provost, Inclusion and Multicultural Engagement at tbrett at email.arizona.edu<mailto:tbrett at email.arizona.edu> Thank you for the impactful work you continue do in your respective areas.
