UAAC:

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to update everyone on some of the organizational changes taking place in central administration. As you all know, Academic Initiatives and Student Success (AISS) was formed with the principle idea of working across the traditional boundaries of higher education, what some might call academic affairs and student affairs. That means that we have worked hard to develop synergies in areas that support the growth of online and distance education, student success and retention innovation, and student engagement and career development.

As AISS continues to evolve, it will become the home of another set of synergies and continue to work across the world of academic and curricular affairs as well as student success, academic advising and student support. While we will need to make several new leadership hires to help organize our area, we will not wait around for them to start to bring new teams together. Those teams will be organized primarily around:

  1. Academic and Curricular Administration to include: Registrar, which also houses Room and Course Scheduling; Curricular Affairs; Transfer Credit and Articulation; University Fees and Student Fees; Arizona Online Administration along with partnerships bringing us into regular conversation with Arizona Online and Distance Education Enrollment Management, the Graduate College, the Advising Resource Center.
  2. Online and Distance Education to include: a core Senior Leadership Team; the Office of Digital Learning; Arizona Online Corporate Initiatives; Arizona Online and Distance Education Administration and dotted lines into Arizona Online Enrollment Marketing (with direct line into Provost’s Office Enrollment Marketing and Communication team), Arizona Online and Distance Recruitment Team (with direct line into the Central Enrollment Management team), and our college partners through our work with the campus’ Student Academic Success Specialists.
  3. Central Academic Support and General Education including direct support of the CLAS Academic Advising Center, the general education program, and our key shared governance committees (Undergraduate Council, University-wide General Education Curriculum Committee, and General Petitions Committee). It should be noted, that many conversations still need to happen around CLAS, particularly as the Strategic Plan continues to move forward.
  4. Student Success and Retention Innovation (SSRI) to include: a central Strategy Team (see new org chart attached); Advising Resource Center; C.A.T.S. Academics; Thrive Center (bringing this together with Fostering Success, UAdvantage, New Start, and Wildcat Welcome); Transfer Student Center; and SALT Center.
  5. Student Engagement and Career Development will continue to operate as a single entity that has brought together engagement, career education, employer relations, and leadership programs into one department; while this group does work a lot with undergraduate students they also serve an important function in the career training of graduate students and will continue to do so.
  6. Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives will be built out under the leadership of our new Assistant Vice Provost for HSI Initiatives.
  7. Research and Assessment within the former division of SAEM-AISS will continue to provide support to a wide range of Provost Office initiatives.
  8. Continuing and Professional Education will continue to provide alternative credentials to those interested in advancing their skills or developing their own workforce development orientation.

In addition, the Office of the Provost continues to support the Union and the Bookstore.

This entire area reports directly into the Office of the Provost and I will serve as Interim Senior Vice Provost and Vice President for Academic Initiatives and Student Success until a formal search can be completed. There is a lot of work to do and we will not slow down on bringing together these teams in support of the larger mission of the institution.

Please don’t hesitate to drop me any questions if you have them. Just as a note, the org chart remains somewhat nebulous as we work out how all the constituent parts fit into the new structure. It is also contingent on some of the Strategic Planning conversations.

All the best,
Vin
